Activity Highlights: What You Need To Know About Boxing

by Justin Wiggins and the TLS Team

Finding a workout or a sport you enjoy is the best way to stay active long term.  You are more likely to keep up with it and come back to it if it’s an activity that keeps you coming back for more. Instead of treating exercise like a chore, it may be beneficial to find something you enjoy doing that simply makes you FEEL healthier (“fun” also helps tremendously).

Boxing
Most of the time when we think of boxing we think of Muhammad Ali or the famed movie series about Rocky Balboa, but there is a lot more than boxing than what is portrayed in film. Boxers come in a lot of different shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common—they are physically fit.

Having trained as a boxer for over 6 years, I have developed a high level of respect for the art. Besides the fact that you have to mentally be a monster willing stand and fight for sport, you have to be in ridiculous physical shape. Boxing is a true total body workout. The typical boxing training session stimulates all muscle groups, and provides the perfect combination of aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (short-burst, without oxygen) exercise.

Cardio
Boxing is an excellent way to work on your cardio. If you may not have noticed it, a typical boxing match consists of 12-15 3-minute rounds. That is over 30 minutes of constant moving while exerting energy to punch and losing energy by being hit! During a typical boxing training session, you will do various exercises to work on your cardio like running, cycling, speed rope and timed rounds using various boxing gear (Heavy bag, Speed bag, etc.).

Strength
Boxers primary weapon is there punching. Behind every punch is a group of muscles that have been finely tuned during training. Your chest, core, biceps, triceps, back and shoulders are all areas in which will be worked while training. Developing strength in those areas will happen in no time with a boxing training session. Another area that will really benefit from boxing is your lower half. The continuous movement required for boxing builds muscles and strength in you calves, quads and hamstrings.

Physique
After working on a boxing workout for some time, you could see results that will make all of your ex-girlfriends come crying back. With the right amount of effort, your physique can look similar to top boxing champions like Floyd Mayweather Jr. or an actor from the movie “300.” And women can do it too! Celebrities such as Beyonce’ Knowles and Rosario Dawson use boxing techniques in their workouts as well!

Boxing training is something everyone can do, whether they plan to compete or not. It is a great workout system that can benefit every part of the body. Going to a gym and linking up with a trainer who specializes in boxing can prove to be a life changer for you. So go step in the ring, boxing is a great way to have fun and develop a great body.
