Everybody and their mother owns a smart phone these days. (Actually, my mother does not!) While smart phones are great for playing Angry Birds and texting when you’re in awkward social situations, did you know that they can also help you keep track of your daily running exercises?
Running apps offer GPS tracking and can store your history and make it available when planning for future workouts. They are a great tool to use as a newbie to keep track of your distance and they also come in handy for the seasoned runner, for marathon training.
There are countless FREE apps available for runners. Shapemagazine shared their favorites and from that list I’d like to share a few with you:
1.RunKeeper is a very popular choice. It easily keeps track of your running patterns and can also be used for many other sports, including skiing! Available for iPhone, Android, and Windows.
2. iMapMyRun includes a social aspect where you can connect to other runners and compete for prizes. Premium members who pay $5.99 for the app receive a personal marathon training guide. Available for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry.
3. MiCoach is backed by Adidas. You can easily sync stats from your app to an online user account, where you can share and compare stats worldwide. Available for iPhone and Android.
4. Runtastic offers the same services as many other running apps and is available in multiple languages. Available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows.
The beauty of free apps is that you can try them all! Find one with the unique features that best align with your running agenda.
